Morning Shake

Sent in by regular reader Clark:
"Every morning my wife and I make protein shakes to consume on the way to work. I want to have a good amount of protein in my shakes and would like to change up the flavors occasionally. My system doesn't respond well to egg whites, so I normally get my protein in the form of soy or whey. Does anyone have a favorite protein powder they could recommend? And I am also curious to know what kinds "different" recipes are out there that I can't just find on the net. What are some other people's favorite concepts? If you could write an article about this, I'd be deeply appreciative."

So I did one better Clark, I let you ask the question in your own words to an audience of MANY. Thanks for the time Clark. If you have a recipe question, food trend you've noticed, concept you'd like to see tested- or at least bounced around the net, or just curious about the Foodchannel (remember - we're not the ones on TV!!) then drop me a line at Foodchannel Editor.

I too love shakes in the morning, sometimes I use a generic whey powder...but when I want a tasty treat I mix in MealPlex from GNC. Chocolate shake is my favorite.

I am using the Atkins soy powder store brand. We add this to a smoothie complete with plain Dannon yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, a banana and local raw honey. Sometimes we do peaches and vanilla yogurt. We also add safflower oil and plan to begin using fish oil as well. Our kids even beg for these smoothies.

I've learned that the mixed frozen fruit bags at Sam's or Wal-Mart work well for smoothies ... you don't have to add ice, which can make the smoothies too thick, I think.

Has anyone tried Sambazon mix? It has the Acai fruit in it. They are calling it the super-blueberry because it has 10 times the anti-oxidants than blueberrys have.

I stop by Planet Smoothie EVERY morning and get a Acai Energy Smoothie. The day wouldn't be right without one. I have to go somewhere because if my neighbors heard a blender at 6:00 AM they would freak!

I have a different problem. My doctor instructed me to cut down on protien due to my kidneys being overworked. I love eggs and cheese and red meat. Anyone have any ideas for low protien diet?

Cyclists use a high glycemic index drink to replenish carbohydrates after a strenuous ride.

All you "low carb" people can pass on this . . . *LMAO*

Non-fat or skim milk (Lactose intolerant types need to pass on this too.), non-fat yougurt (The "real" stuff with live culture.), brown sugar, berries -- frozen strawberries are good, but any will work. Banana, or two . . .

Set the blender to "liquify" and run until the lumps from the banana and berries are history.

Salut ! ! !

You won't get that midmorning slump when you take a quality soy protein.

My husband and I both like the Members'Mark (brand) soy protein powder from Sam's Club. It comes in vanilla or chocolate. I prefer the vanilla, because you can mix it w/anything - not so w/chocolate. For the liquid, we use low fat milk, or soy milk, or fruit juice. Throw in a couple of scoops of the soy powder, some fruit (whatever we happen to have on hand: strawberries, peaches, banana, blueberries...whatever) and ice; blend well. We like ice in it, because that makes it really cold, and thickens it a little more. Sometimes, If I have some yogurt, I'll throw some of that in too. Yummmm! and it holds us through the morning!

I have been using a shake that can be made with water or milk. It is fantastic. You have the option of several flavors. If interested go to www.wonderslim.com. A little expensive but I'v lost 12lbs and 3%body fat since I have started using it at the end of July.

Have you tried LisaLynn Nutriceuticals Complete Protein shakes? They are meal replacement and help to lose weight but at 155 calories certainly can't hurt as a snack. I do not tolerate vitamins well and take this shake daily to replace the vitamins I cannot take. It also supplies me with Glucosomine and Chondroitin which I need for arthritis. She also has protein bars recommended by Lisa that I take on trips or eat when I can't get to a meal. I would love to lose weight and continue to try but at my age (65) I am happy to maintain with exercise and the protein shake that keeps my energy level up. Go into her website and check it out. I am a client of Lisa's and have been since 1995. She has helped me tremendously! www.lisalynnfitness.com Good luck!

I drink the ACAI energy smoothie everyday as well from PLANET SMOOTHIE. It is a super food. The small size has over 7000 ORACS/Units of anti-oxidants inside and it tastes great. Average person should consume 3500 ORACS a day. Most people eat 1200 ORACS a day. Look younger by replenishing cells with PLANET SMOOTHIE acai.

i use ON 100% Whey Gold Standard. i has VERY little sugar (1G) and 24 Grams of protein. vanilla ice cream isn't that bad if you want to add honey and bananas to it and honey, it'll taste better. a friend recommended it to me and it does taste BETTER :)
