Atkins Goes Under
In case you haven't heard, Atkins Nutritionals filed for bankruptcy this week. I thought I'd post it to see if anybody had any opinions on the matter. According to MorningNewsBeat.com:
"The company blamed the filing on consumers’ reduced interest in the low-carb craze, as well as the backlash against the diet on the part of people arguing that its principles may have promoted weight loss but was not healthy overall."
As a hypoglycemic, the best thing that could have happened for me was the proliferation of low-sugar items. But I know that this was not totally unexpected, since many people in the food industry recognized that the Atkins Diet was a fad. The great thing is that it, along with South Beach and a couple of others, finally re-positioned healthy eating back in the forefront of consumers' minds. And people will always be lured by the get-thin-quick-but-don't-give-up-anything diets.
So I'm opening it up to you all: Any thoughts on Atkins? Any other diets out there that you love or hate? Is there anything that actually has staying power other than a simple balanced diet and portion control?

It is sad that so many people still think of the Atkins Low-Carb diet as a fad. If you were allergic to too many carbs when you started the diet plan, you are still allergic now. That translates to a metabolic disorder that to date doesn't have a cure. The Atkins lifestyle should be considered a life-long choice if it works for you as it has for millions.

From Amy: Y'all have good points - for some people, low-carb is a way of life. I know I have to make sure that I eat a balanced amount of protein and carbs in each meal at the very least.
I think the fad aspect, as mentioned in one of the comments, was that so many people took it up all at once (9% of the population in January 2004) without doing the correct research on it. Atkins didn't make up the low-carb diet, it just made it popular. And low-carb will continue, even without Atkins.

My husband and I have done Atkins and love it, my triglicerides were 1500 cholesterol was 400 and after doing Atkins and losing 80 pounds they are now 112 and 198 hows that!!It sickens me that people do not read the book and think that they cannot eat fruit and vegetables that is nonsense, for those that take things out of context, learn how to read!!Do it right and it works I eat more salads and fresh fruit of the right kind than I have ever had in my life!!Good carbs are good and a steady diet of bacon and cheese is not recommended AS IT STATES IN THE "BOOK"!!!!!

I too agree that people never READ the BOOK! I read the book several years ago and thought it was the best thing going. Unfortunately, I never started the diet and I have gained more weight. I recently joined the LA Weight-Loss system, and I'm not following that program either, but I still totally believe in the Atkins program and think that if anything ever works for me it will be Atkins. I READ THE BOOK. It really bothers me when the misinformed put the plan down.

I wasn't shocked that Atkins filed for bankruptcy is natural. Many nutritionist have alerted Atkins's defect such as unbalanced diet, especially recommendation only eating protein and fat would result in heart desease. I don't know how many of'em have been suffering though.

Atkins is dead.
Pass the bread.

I for one have changed my eating habits because of Atkins. You have to read the whole book and put all of it to use in your diet. I've lost weight, lowered my cholesterol, and eat a much better diet now. And no, I didn't give up on bread.....
The diet is basically a diabetic's diet is it not? So it can't be bad.
As far as being a fad, yes, so many people jumped on the bandwagon and then grew tired of it because of another "fad" on the horizon. Just as it always happens.
No, you can't live on meat and cheese. Read the book.
Personally I think the Atkins org. got too greedy and tried to put out too many products (high priced). That helped to kill the company.

Diabetics BEWARE. The Atkins Diet is not a diabetic diet and should never be used in place of ADA research based diet recommendations. The Atkins Diet is one man's opinion of healthy eating. It is not based on reasearch. This is a scam that made Atkins and his wife very rich.

Atkins caused many illnesses in my town and caused several deaths. It's a shame one man can cause so much pain to so many. Good riddens!!!

I agree with the ones who say that Atkins is a way of life. The Atkins diet has been the easiest way for me to stay slim. I now eat very healthy because of what I've learned in the Atkins book. People need to get all the facts before they comment on anything. I will always follow the Atkins plan!

The ADA diet causes complications that kill diabetics. It's a joke how many carbs they think an impaired pancreas can handle. Atkins was on the right track- and at the end of his life he did modify his plan to include fruits and vegetables. Eating low glycemically is the way to go- NOT the ADA exchange plan.

dont care what people say about atkins, "It works". Its not about just meat, other foods, educate yourself about it first, before you comment on this "so called craze".

I had high cholesterol for years and was instructed by several doctors to eat a low fat high carb diet. Nothing changed for years. I decided to do the opposite, low carbs and all the protein I could handle. Voila!! My cholesterol dropped 60 points and I lost 30 pounds in less than 2 months. Atkins by accident. It worked

When I look around I see a large pertentage of overweight Americans. It is truly very sad and frustrating. I am studying to be a Registerd Dietitician and we learn the low carb diet is not a good one. However, I have been on an "unstrict" version of it for quite a while. I didn't have a weight problem when I started it and I don't have one now. I simply prefer the eating styles of the low carb plan. I think the problem is people tend to get lazy and its easier to uncommit themselves and make excuses. For most of us watching our weight will be a way of life for the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, it was the hand we were dealt and we have to deal with it. We just have to find what diet works for us and stick with.

I have followed the Atkins diet fairly close for a couple of years and have found it to be beneficial. Although I have reached my goal weight, I still follow a high protein, low carb lifetyle. I probably always will now. I appreciate what this program has helped me to learn, but I rarely bought their high-priced products to be successful in their system.
From my perspective, it may be their investment in products that has brought them to backruptcy, not their philosophy.

Wow...this is like a zombie movie for me. "Look a dead dude walking down the street!"
I thought atkins was LONG DEAD! The fact that they just filed for bankruptcy is simply, someone finally did the right thing and shot that horse.
