Hot & Cool Trends

If you’ve been excited about the age-reversing claims about resveratrol—something found in red wine—you’ll probably want to learn about a candy bar said to have as much resveratrol as 50 glasses of wine.

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.-based ResVez Inc. has launched the first nutrition bar containing resveratrol, the ingredient in grapes acclaimed for its potential to delay the effects of aging.

As reported at FoodProcessing.com, the rich dark chocolate bar, called Winetime, claims to contain as much resveratrol as 50 glasses of wine. It has two sources of resveratrol: resVida, a 99% pure trans-resveratrol compound; and an extract derived from premium French red grapes.

The Winetime dark chocolate bar is loaded with dates and almonds, is high in fiber and also contains seven, count 'em, seven of the so-called super fruits — cranberry, noni, pomegranate, goji berry, açai, mangosteen and blueberry. Described by its makers as a ‘luxury nutrition bar,’ it clocks in at 190 calories, contains no trans fat, artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors or preservatives, and no high fructose corn syrup.

Resveratrol has enjoyed a great deal of positive press coverage during the past year on TV shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, 60 Minutes, and a Barbara Walters special. Most of the research and testing on resveratrol has been conducted using animals to this point, but results of human clinical studies are expected to be reviewed in medical journals in the coming months.

Winetime bars retail for about $30 for a package of ten bars. To learn more, you can visit the Res-Ves website.
