A New Zealand food chemist-turned-chocolatier says her salami-tinged chocolate treats are going over big, especially with dudes.
Candy maker Hanna Frederick created venison chocolate truffles that she served to 150 meat lovers at a New Zealand Meat Industry Association conference. The treats are made from a blend of dark chocolate and ground-up salty meat.
Shaped like mini sausages, the candies have a delicious salami aftertaste, Dr. Frederick says. Quoted in an article for The New Zealand Herald, Dr. Frederick said, ‘There’s this smoky taste to start, then a strong chocolate flavor comes in, and at the end you have this wonderful taste of salami.’
Apparently the meaty chocolates went over better with the men than the women, who were ‘quieter’ in expressing approval, according to Dr. Frederick. “Women tend to love their chocolate more fruity, more feminine, and I guess meat doesn’t have that feel to it,” she said.
Dr. Frederick, a Hungarian-born food chemist who quit her day job to become a chocolatier, has developed other odd chocolates, including one injected with a potent Southeast Asian herb which is supposed to stimulate testosterone production in men.
Bet that one was a hit with the guys, too.
