New Term: the Gastrosexual

Hot & Cool Trends from CultureWaves™

By Cari Martens

She didn’t originate the term, but Eleanor Glover has an interesting story in the Daily Mail that talks about the “Gastrosexual” – in other words, men who love to cook.

The interesting thing is that a man’s cooking skill is apparently as much a factor in impressing women as is salary and appearance. She cites the report “Emergence of the Gastrosexual,” saying, “According to the study by food company PurAsia 48 per cent of people say being able to cook makes a person more attractive to them and 23 per cent of 18-34 year old men say they cook to potentially seduce a partner.”

The report pegs the Gastrosexual male as “between the ages of 25-44, upwardly mobile, well travelled and cooks for their own pleasure and the praise of others.”

How much of this has to do with the rise in male chefs (such as Jamie Oliver, pictured) in the entertainment field is anyone’s guess. What I’d like to know is when are they going to start doing the laundry?
