Restaurants & Institutions magazine, a leading trade publication in the foodservice industry for many years, has printed its last issue.
The magazine was itself kind of an institution, well-read by everyone from the corporate leaders in the industry, to neighborhood restaurant owners and chefs, to the company cafeteria manager.
U.K.-based Reed Elsevier, which owns R&I with offices in Oak Brook, Ill., announced today that the monthly trade journal would cease publication, along with 22 other publications owned under the company’s Reed Business Information division.
Some of the other magazines closing down are HOTELS, Chain Leader and the Graphic Arts Blue Book.
In a memo to employees, Reed Business Information CEO Keith Jones wrote, ‘These publications have had very experienced, professional and committed teams running them in the most difficult of circumstances. However, their trading performances have been under pressure for some time and the impact of the recession and media migration in the markets for these titles is such that we cannot see our way back to profitable growth. This is very sad for all of us in the RBI community and I wish colleagues at these titles the very best for the future and thank them for their services to readers, advertisers and the company.’
RBI, which has about 50 publications, found buyers for nearly 20 of its titles, but was unable to sell others. A spokesman for Reed Elsevier said that Restaurants & Institutions could live again if someone stepped forward to purchase the intellectual property rights.
