White House Publishes Obama Beer Recipes

Hot & Cool Food Trends

Craft beer lovers, party supporters and just plain party animals can now try to brew up the same kinds of beers that President Obama is currently brewing up at the White House.

The president has received quite a bit of coverage from the media. You may have seen David Letterman asking Mr. Obama about it on his CBS talk show earlier this week.

In a recent blog post entitled "Ale to the Chief," White House Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass wrote  that "with public excitement about White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it."

"To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before," Kass commented.

But there’s kind of a fly in the ointment when it comes to trying to replicate the recipe. The key ingredient for the White House Honey Brown Ale and the White House Honey Porter, is honey straight from the White House's first-ever beehive. Not something easy to come by these days.

“The honey gives the beer a rich aroma and a nice finish, but it doesn’t sweeten it,” blogged Kass.

A Beltway area craft beer executive opined that the ale would likely pair well with a spicy and savory dish such as pork tenderloin or roast duck. He also mentioned he would be interested in making the beers in his District of Columbia brewery. The porter would work well with a dessert or even floated with ice cream, he added.

The president bought a home brewing kit last year and, according to press reports, he served the beer at the White House Super Bowl party and other celebrations.

Mr. Obama is certainly on trend here. Nearly 30,000 people currently belong to the American Homebrewers Association.

Below is the recipe for White House Honey Ale. You can find the recipe for Honey Porter here.
