Classic Irish Coffee

Irish Coffee was originally created in 1943 by an Irish chef/barman, Joe Sheridan, as a warm and welcoming drink for the first American tourists to arrive in Ireland via transatlantic passenger airplanes.

When Shannon International Airport opened in 1947, Irish coffee was served as the official beverage.

This recipe is true to Joe Sheridan’s original recipe, first served in the early ’40s.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh brewed black coffee
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 ounces (1 jigger) Irish whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon lightly whipped cream

Preparation

  • 1
Pour hot coffee into a warmed glass until it is about 3/4 full.
  • 2
Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved; stir in the Irish whiskey.
  • 3
Top with lightly whipped cream, being careful not to blend cream with the coffee/whiskey. Serve hot!

Very interesting. Look here for another true Irish Coffee: http://www.thebuenavista.com/irishcoffee.html The Buena Vista in San Francisco is renowned for their interpretation of the orginal Irish Coffee. Cheers!
