Black Walnut Sheet Cake


  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • ICING FOR SHEET CAKE: 1 stick margarine
  • 6 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1 cup Black Walnuts
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 pound box powdered sugar

For an easy way to give your traditional recipe for Sheet Cake an unexpected twist, substitute Black Walnuts. They will add a more robust and out-of-the-ordinary flavor. The rich, earthy flavor is derived from the roots of the tree.

  1. Sift dry ingredients into bowl.
  2. Melt margarine and mix with cocoa and water.
  3. Bring to a rapid boil and pour over dry ingredients.
  4. Add buttermilk and eggs.
  5. Bake in cookie sheet pan with edge at 350ºF for 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. ICING FOR SHEET CAKE: Melt margarine, cocoa and buttermilk.
  7. Bring to a boil and add powdered sugar and black walnuts.
  8. Spread while cake is hot.
