An old fashioned cooked icing recipe that is sure to become a standard on family birthday cakes. Also see our Editor's commentary on birthday cakes!
Foodie Byte: As a substitute for water and cornstarch you can also use 1 cup milk with 4 tablespoons flour; made this way, though, the icing should be refrigerated.
Preparation
- Cook together cornstarch and water until thick and clear. Stir constantly—it doesn’t take very long, and it will get lumpy if you don’t stir it. Let cool completely.
- Beat together the remaining ingredients.
- Add the chilled mixture and beat until smooth.
