Salt Dough Recipe for Cookie Ornaments
Ingredients
- 2 cups plain flour
- 1 cup plain salt
- 1 cup room temperature water
If making these as hanging ornaments, before baking poke a hole through one section, not too close to the edge. Use a small dowel (like the end of a chopstick) and be sure to remove the dough from the other side after making the hole. Once baked and painted or decorated with glitter, tie a ribbon through the hole and enjoy the ornament!
Preparation
- Mix the salt and flour in a large bowl and then add water.
- Knead for about five minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover with cling wrap to keep the dough from drying out, and let sit for 30 minutes.
- Cut into desired shapes, using cookie cutters, and place onto a cookie sheet as you would any cookie.
- Bake for approximately two hours at a low temperature setting: 50ºF for the first half-hour, then increase temperature slowly to 100ºF and cook until the piece is uniform in color.
- If any air bubbles appear while baking, pierce the bubbles with a pin and gently depress the dough. If the dough starts to darken before cooking is complete, cover with a piece of aluminum foil.
- The dough is cooked when it's hard and sounds hollow when tapped. Turn the oven off and leave the salt dough in the oven until cool.
- WARNING: These cookie ornaments are not edible.
