Crunchy salty tortilla chips and creamy guacamole are impressive when they’re freshly made at home.

Why try? Fresh corn chips are so easy and you won’t believe how much better they are than the packaged type!

Foodie Byte: The guacamole we at The FoodChannel test kitchens recommend can be found in the refrigerated section of your grocery store. This product is superb on its own but when you add fresh pieces of tomato and onion, everyone will think it’s completely from scratch.

This recipe is part of our Cinco de Mayo spread. To check out the entire buffet, click right here.

Ingredients

  • 20 corn tortillas, quartered
  • oil for frying
  • salt
  • 1 package guacamole (both packets)
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion

Preparation

  • 1
    Heat frying oil to 350˚F.
  • 2
Drop tortilla quarters into hot oil and cook while turning with a large metal spider until edges start to brown. Drain on wire racks and season with salt while hot.
  • 3
For guacamole, empty packets into medium bowl. Add tomatoes and onion, and toss to combine.
  • 4
    Serve guacamole with fresh chips.

If the guacamole was freshly made I would be impressed. Elsie
