Question:

Recently we purchased an electric ice cream maker. This weekend I wanted to make Sorbet so opened my frozen dessert recipe book – the title of the book is Ice Cream Making for Idiots – someone was certainly thinking of me when it was written because I am NOT a cook. But the Sorbet recipe looked easy until I came to the last item: simple syrup. Please – WHAT IS SIMPLE SYRUP? The book doesn’t have a recipe for it, it is not listed in the glossary or the index – I’d love to try this, but I can’t figure out what simple syrup is – please – can you help? Many thanks.

—Paula

Answer:

Simple syrup is simply a mixture of sugar and water in equal parts, heated until the sugar dissolves and then cooled. It is used in a number of mixed drinks and dessert recipes. Here is an easy recipe for Simple Syrup.

Good luck, and enjoy your sorbet!
