Culinary Classes Meet You Where You Are

Hot & Cool Trends from CultureWaves™

When food fans think about their ideal vacation, food is always part of the equation. Not just eating it, but discovering it. Finding the fun farmer’s market. The amazing new kitchen gadget. The off-the-beaten-path restaurant. And, admit it – what self-respecting Food Channel site user wouldn’t love to include a culinary class in the next family get away?

Perhaps that’s why Silver Dollar City (actual class, pictured) has made it easy for families to have that culinary experience. Whether it’s the chief cook in the family, or the whole clan (age 11 and up recommended), you can now enroll in a cooking class as part of your day at the theme park in Branson, Missouri. It’s a trend we’re seeing more of in what we call “Pop-Up Lifestyle” – classes made available where you are.

This trend includes the desire to watch and learn from people who have made cooking a career, and reflects the economy and the need to plan more meals at home, without sacrificing taste or fun. The latest classes are smaller (or even private, in your home) and interactive – meaning you often get to taste, touch, and comment.

When planning your own culinary class experience, try the following:

  • A one day excursion that will give you a taste of a class. While we haven’t found another theme park venturing into the culinary education market, there are classes at local community colleges.
  • Call the notable restaurants or caterers in your area. We’re seeing more chefs do monthly demonstrations. Check them out in your community (and feel free to comment below when you find one!).
  • Visit your area kitchen store and see if they have a referral.
  • Think about the best cooks you know, and get a few friends together for a monthly cooking exchange. A great social activity that can lead to new recipes and stronger friendships!
